Earning a Canadian degree and work experience can give you an edge in Canada’s Express Entry system, making you more competitive for PR. However, while studying in Canada helps, it’s not a guarantee. Several factors, like your skills, qualifications, and occupation, play a big role in your PR application.
With Canada constantly updating its immigration policies, it’s important to stay on top of the latest news if you want to turn your study permit into permanent residency. Here are five tips to help you maximize your chances!
1. Keep Up with Immigration Policy Changes
Canada loves to tweak its immigration policies depending on what the economy needs. So, if you’ve got your heart set on staying here, make sure you’re keeping up with the changes. For example, earlier this year, the government said some private college programs won’t get you a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) anymore. That’s huge! So, do your homework and make sure your program still qualifies if you plan to stay and work here after graduation.

In 2023, Canada rolled out Express Entry draws targeting specific in-demand jobs. We’re talking healthcare, STEM (science, tech, engineering, and math), trades, transport, and agriculture. Most provinces (except Quebec and Nunavut) run these programs to attract skilled workers. Some provinces even have Express Entry PNP streams, which could give you an extra 600 CRS points (yep, that’s a lot!), making it easier to get PR. There are over 80 different PNP streams, so there’s bound to be something that works for you!
4. Up Your Language Game
Canada’s a bilingual country, and speaking both English and French can seriously boost your PR application. Want to max out your CRS score? Crush those language tests like IELTS or CELPIP. If you didn’t score high enough the first time, no worries—you can always retake them. Oh, and if you’re feeling up for a challenge, learning French is a golden opportunity. French-speaking candidates are getting lots of love in the Express Entry draws lately, and it’s expected to continue into 2025 and 2026. So maybe it’s time to brush up on your “bonjour”!
5. Get Your Degrees Recognized
