Canada New PGWP Updates
5 October 2024Canada Changed PGWP Rules for Indian Students
11 October 2024Important Changes to Canada’s Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP) for Indian Students: What You Need to Know
Recent updates from Canada have brought significant changes to the Postgraduate Work Permit (PGWP) rules for international students. These changes particularly impact Indian students who often pursue diploma programs in Canada with the hope of securing a PGWP. Under the new regulations, students enrolling in diploma programs after November 1, 2024, will not be eligible for a PGWP unless they are pursuing studies in specific fields like healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), transportation, or agriculture.
However, there is good news for Indian students pursuing Bachelor’s or Master’s programs—they are exempt from this rule, ensuring their continued eligibility for a PGWP. This exemption applies to students from South Asia, including India, meaning you can still qualify for a PGWP if you are pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Canada.
What Does This Mean for Diploma Students?
Previously, many Indian students opted for diploma programs to gain Canadian qualifications and secure a work permit. However, with these new restrictions, students will need to carefully choose programs in fields that remain eligible for PGWP. This brings us to the important question: Which diploma programs will still qualify for a PGWP?
PGWP-Eligible Diploma Programs (Effective from November 1, 2024)
Based on the recent changes, diploma programs in the following fields will still be eligible for PGWP if pursued at a recognized public institution:
1. Healthcare Programs
•Nursing and Allied Health (e.g., Medical Laboratory Technician, Pharmacy Technician)
•Veterinary Sciences (e.g., Veterinary Clinical Sciences)
•Nutrition and Dietetics (e.g., Human Nutrition, Foods and Nutrition)
•Rehabilitation Therapy (e.g., Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Therapy Assistant)
2. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Programs
•Computer Science & Information Technology (e.g., Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity)
•Engineering (e.g., Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics)
•Environmental Science & Sustainability (e.g., Climate Science, Environmental Management)
•Biological and Biomedical Sciences (e.g., Biotechnology, Genetics, Neuroscience)
3. Transportation Programs
•Aviation (e.g., Aircraft Maintenance, Commercial Pilot Training)
•Logistics & Supply Chain Management (e.g., Transport and Logistics Management)
•Heavy Equipment Maintenance (e.g., Heavy Equipment Technician)
4. Agriculture Programs
•Agribusiness & Farm Management (e.g., Agricultural Business Management, Dairy Farming)
•Horticulture & Crop Production (e.g., Greenhouse Management, Plant Nursery Operations)
•Agricultural Technology (e.g., Agricultural Machinery Technician)
Here is a list of prospective programs that may be eligible for a post-graduate work permit if an international student is pursuing atleast 8 months diploma in Canada after November 1, 2024.
Note: It is a tentative list as per the information available.
Why These Changes Matter for Indian Students
These changes will have a direct impact on students coming to Canada for diploma programs. If you choose a diploma that is not in the fields of healthcare, STEM, transportation, or agriculture, you will not be eligible for a PGWP after November 1, 2024. However, Indian students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s programs will continue to enjoy the benefits of a PGWP, enabling them to work in Canada after completing their studies.
What Should You Do?
If you are an Indian student planning to study in Canada, it is crucial to carefully select your program based on these new regulations. Consider enrolling in one of the fields that remain eligible for PGWP or pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree if you want to ensure your eligibility.
