End of the Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express
November 8, 2024, Ottawa—Canada is dedicated to providing fair and equitable access to the study permit application process for all overseas students.
In order to give qualified post-secondary students quicker processing, the Student Direct Stream (SDS) was introduced in 2018. Legal residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam were eventually granted access to the SDS. The Nigeria Student Express (NSE) process for prospective Nigerian university students was comparable.
Strengthening program integrity, addressing student vulnerability, and providing equitable and equitable access to the application process and a meaningful academic experience are all priorities for Canada. In order to fulfill this obligation, the Student Direct Stream (SDS)
Why Canada terminated NSE and SDS?
These programs have been discontinued for a number of reasons, according to the Canadian government:
Strengthening Program Integrity: The IRCC hopes to strengthen the dependability and openness of its immigration procedures by discontinuing SDS and NSE.
Simplifying the application procedure for study permits guarantees that each application is reviewed consistently and completely.
Resolving Systemic Vulnerabilities : According to the immigration department, fraud, deception, and exploitation are issues that international students occasionally encounter.
The government can better oversee the study permit procedure and lessen instances of exploitation and abuse by doing away with specialized streams.
Providing Every Applicant with Equal Opportunity: Students from all over the world have been drawn to Canada because of its reputation as an inclusive and varied country.
Prospective students’ next steps: These streams will handle eligible SDS and NSE applications submitted by 2:00 p.m. ET on November 8, 2024. Applications for research permits filed on or after this date will be handled through the standard study permit procedure.
Those who want to apply for a study visa from a nation where the SDS or NSE initiatives have been offered will not be negatively impacted by this move. All students must fulfill Canada’s study permit application criteria, regardless of whether they qualified for the SDS or NSE.
