Do’s and don’ts for the IELTS Writing test

One of the essential module in IELTS is writing which includes two tasks where Task 2 covers an essay (or IELTS Essay Writing). Here, an essay topic will be given to you, and your grade will be determined by how well you can react to it.

Do’s

• Examine the subject. -Completely answer every section of the prompt.
• Plan your essay in the opening for the first five minutes: In a thesis statement, restate the assignment and outline the goal of your Essay Your essay should be divided into four paragraphs: introduction, two main body paragraphs, and conclusion. Each paragraph should begin with a topic sentence.
• Give each of your points a justification and an illustration. If relevant, include a summary of the essay’s main ideas in the conclusion. express your viewpoint in a formal manner (e.g. Use formal language (e.g., retain –> – maintain: make sure –> ensure), in my opinion.
• To sound more formal and impartial, utilize the passive voice (e.g. The film will be shown…) Use synonyms to avoid repetition (important = vital = essential = crucial, for example). Employ formal linking words, such as “despite,” “yet,” and “furthermore.”
• Make use of sophisticated sentences Check your work for basic errors by proofreading it.
• Ensure that you have written a minimum of 250 words.

Don’t s

• DON’T use contractions (e.g. I don’t –> I do not)
• avoid being personal (e.g. I, me, my)
• DON’T use emotive language (e.g. disgusting, fabulous)
• DON’T use only personal examples
• DON’T use colloquial expressions (e.g. I had great time)
• avoid simple vocabulary (e.g. say, think, bad) and basic linking words (e.g. and. but, also)
• DON’T repeat the same vocabulary throughout your essay
• DON’T write simple sentences (e.g. Everyone thinks it’s true. I disagree.)
• DON’T use overgeneralisations (e.g. everyone, always, never, all)
• DON’T copy the task in your introduction
• DON’T forget to answer ALL parts of the task
• DON’T write less than 250 words
• DON’T forget to summarise and conclude your essay in the last paragraph
• DON’T use examples or arguments that are not related to the topic.
• Don’t use complicated words or phrases. Consider whether a sentence using complicated terms may be simplified by using simpler words and phrases. Do that if the response is yes.
• Avoid using colloquialisms and slang words.
